Empowering Youth for Success
Since 2010, NoMo has provided a comprehensive anti-violence program that offers alternative education, tutoring, study skills training, and instruction leading to secondary school completion, including dropout prevention strategies, Paid work experiences with an academic and occupational education component, Occupational skills training, with a focus on recognized credentials for in-demand occupations, Leadership development activities, e.g., community service, peer-centered activities, Supportive services, Comprehensive Individual and Family guidance and counseling, including drug and alcohol abuse counseling, Financial literacy education, Entrepreneurial skills training, Career readiness training and preparation for entering the workforce.

Postsecondary preparation and transition activities that provide youth with increased confidence, improved social/emotional skills that lead healthier individuals, increased family stability, decreased substance abuse & criminal activities, and a clear path to success.” It suggests breaking free from the cycle of poverty through these empowering programs and transitions.

At the North Philadelphia headquarters of NOMO, a nonprofit for at-risk youth in the city, a few dozen young people — boys and girls, 11 to 17 — had gathered on a sweltering summer afternoon. Rickey Duncan, the organization’s chief executive, asked for a show of hands: How many felt endangered on a daily basis? A large majority raised a hand. How many would feel safer with a gun? The response was about the same.
